Named after Mountain Lake, which is next to this street at 12th Avenue, Lake Street runs along the beginning edge of the Presidio's 1400+ acres, making this an attractive area in which to reside for those who enjoy the outdoors.
The Temple Emanu-El is described by Sally Woodbridge, local historian, as " a monumental Neo-Byzantine Roman temple with a handsome forecourt." It provides an elegant anchor to the beginning of Lake Street's linear promenade. Designed by A. Page Brown, Sylvain Schnaittacher and Bernard Maybeck. 1924-26.
Two exceptional buildings, located a the corner of Lake and Arguello, provide an elegant entry into this linear residential area.
St. John's Presbyterian Church, designed by architects Dodge and Dolliver, completed in 1906.

Arthur Foster, St. John's patron, turned over the deed to the congregation saying, "To be rich in spirit and free of debt."

Decorated by numerous fine residences, many in the Arts & Crafts style, Lake Street runs all the way from Arguello out to Sea Cliff, with a number of cul-de-sac access points to The Presidio.
